About Nicola Enoch

When Nicola Enoch’s son Tom was born in 2004, she realised how influenced she was by a medical narrative that perpetuates outdated attitudes and perceptions, and how ignorant and discriminatory she was around disability.  In 2006 she formed The Ups of Downs a regional charity and in 2019 national charity Down Syndrome UK, of which Positive about Down syndrome is pioneering in providing information, support and training to parents and professionals in maternity care and the preschools years.

Nicola is a Founding Officer and Vice Chair of the National Down Syndrome Policy Group providing the secretariat to the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Down Syndrome, pivotal in supporting Dr Liam Fox MP’s Down Syndrome Bill, which became the Down Syndrome Act 2022.

Nicola is passionate about ensuring expectant parents have access to the information and support they deserve, and in 2018 delivered a TEDx talk ‘How I nearly terminated my son through ignorance’.

Nicola regularly speaks at midwifery events and has been published by the British Journal of Midwifery, the Royal College of Midwives, AIMS and International Journal of Birth and Parent Education. Nicola, Tom and Emily live in Warwickshire in the UK.
