About Sean Slade

Sean Slade – Senior Director of Global Outreach Sean Slade is the Senior Director of Outreach at ASCD, focusing on promoting and expanding the ASCD Whole Child approach across the United States and globally. The ASCD Whole Child approach is part of a broad, multiyear plan to shift public dialogue about education from an academic focus to a whole child approach that encompasses all factors required for successful student outcomes. It strives to enhance learning by addressing each student's social, emotional, physical, and academic needs through the shared contributions of schools, families, communities, and policymakers. During his nearly three decades in education, spanning 5 countries and 4 continents, he has spoken and written extensively on topics related to the whole child and health and well-being, and he has been at the forefront of promoting and using school climate, connectedness, resilience, and a youth development focus for school improvement. He has been a teacher, head of department, educational researcher, senior education officer, and director. He has taught, trained, and directed education initiatives in Australia, Italy, Venezuela, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He has written for the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, and ASCD's Inservice blog. He has published with ASCD, Routledge and Human Kinetics. He is a Social & Emotional Learning expert for NBC Education Nation and NBC Parent Toolkit, VP for Advocacy at the International Union for Health Promotion & Education (North America) and a member of the OECD 2030 Future of Education Task Force and UNESCO Chair on Health & Education. Since joining ASCD, Slade has directed the Whole Child and Healthy School Communities programs; led the development of the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model; directed and moderated the Whole Child Symposia. Slade currently serves as Vice President of Advocacy for the International Union of Health Promotion and Education (North American Region), Board Member for the American School Health Association and Wellbeing Australia, and has been on the steering committees for several alliances and organizations, including the UNESCO-FRESH, International School Health Network, National Coordinating Committee on School Health and Safety, National School Climate Council, and the Coalition for Community Schools.
