61% of people in the EU worry about online privacy and tailored advertising

Digital security and privacy are among the most challenging issues raised by digital services. Individuals perceive digital security as a major issue, in particular where there are significant risks of personal data breaches and identity theft. When using the Internet for online banking or shopping, the most common concern is about “someone taking or misusing personal data” (mentioned by 43% of Internet users in the European Union compared to 37% a year ago). Around 70% of Internet users in Europe are still concerned that their online personal information is not kept secure by websites. Across the European Union in 2016, more than 60% of all individuals were concerned about their online activities being recorded to provide them with tailored adverts. In Germany, France and Denmark the share was even much higher, at 82%, 70% and 68% respectively.
