"I’m pleased to help the OECD launch its in-depth examination of how all of us can get the greatest benefits from artificial intelligence and machines that learn"

We need to adapt technology to our lives and adapt our lives to new technology

This requires a balanced dialogue of public and private sector interests. The creation of this OECD group is an important step in understanding the ways in which machines are changing our lives and redefining what it means to be human. The OECD is positioned perfectly to gather experts from its member countries and other nations for vigorous debate on how to get the maximum benefit from machines.

Intelligent machines will help build a better future if we guide the development to favor the consumers, the citizen, and freedoms –human well-being and human health. The OECD has a role to play in helping people overcome fears and find smarter ways for humans and machines to work together.

Here's the facts and what we need to do

1. We are facing unprecedented technological leaps. Advances in AI and computer science can take us to the next level of development of our civilization.

2. The speed and scope of these advances have renewed fears that machines will replace humans. Two decades ago, I famously lost a chess match to a computer. Rather than pessimism, I saw cause for optimism in what machines can do for us. I remain optimistic but not blind to the challenges.

3. We need to face our fears if we want to get the most out of technology and the most out of ourselves. We must face our fears if we want to make sure that the machines work for us.

4. We need to understand how intelligent machines can help turn our grandest dreams into reality.

5. The creation of the new expert working group on AI by the OECD is an important step in understanding the ways in which machines are changing our lives and redefining what it means to be human.

6. The OECD is positioned perfectly to bring together experts from its 35 member countries and other nations for a vigorous debate on how to get the maximum benefits from machines and put to rest the unfounded fears.

7. As I made clear in my book Deep Thinking, I am convinced that machines will help build a better future – if we guide their development to favor the consumer, the citizen and freedom.

8. I’m equally optimistic that the OECD and its partners will help us confront our fears and find smarter ways for humans and machines to work together to improve well-being.
